Breaking News: Eddie Guerrero Dead

From WWE.com

WWE is deeply saddened by the news that Eddie Guerrero has passed away. He was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis. Eddie is survived by his wife Vickie and his two daughters.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Guerrero family.

People don’t know about the things
i say and do they don’t understand
about the shit that i’ve
been through, it’s been so long
since i’ve been home i’ve been gone,
i’ve been gone for way too long
maybe i forgot all the things I miss
Oh somehow I know there’s more to life
than this, I said it too many times
and i still stand firm you get what
you put in and people get what they
deserve, still i ain’t seen mine
No I ain’t seen mine
I’ve been giving just ain’t been gettin’
I’ve been walking down that line
So I think I’ll keep walking
with my head held high
i’ll keep moving on and only God
knows why “

~ Kid Rock’s “Only God Knows Why”

I don’t even know what to say about the passing of Eddie Guerrero, I really
don’t.  As I sit here and type this, I am numb, blindsided by news I didn’t
see coming, from miles away.  It was just Friday night that he was in the
ring with Mr. Kennedy entertaining us on Smackdown, and now he’s
gone.

His dying, far too young, is a tragedy.  There is no other way to look
at it.  A wife has lost her husband.  Children have lost their
father.  Well beyond that, we as wrestling fans have lost a true champion
as well, and it’s just downright sad my friends.

TNA JOINS THE WRESTLING WORLD IN MOURNING THE PASSING OF EDDIE GUERRERO

On Sunday morning, TNA joined the wrestling world in learning of the unfortunate and untimely passing of Eddie Guerrero.

The mood backstage in Orlando is solemn, as many TNA staff and stars were close with Eddie and worked with him throughout his career.

Everyone in TNA will keep Eddie and his family in our thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks to come as we say goodbye to a friend…

TNA Wrestling News

PWinsider.com is reporting that both Raw and Smackdown will be tribute shows. They are taping both tonight in Minneapolis.

Guerrero, 38, was found at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis. He was in town for Sunday night’s “WWE Supershow” TV taping at Target Center.

Police were called to the hotel just after 7:30 a.m. and attempts were made to revive the wrestler, Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson Ron Reier said.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner was at the hotel. Additional information on Guerrero’s death was not immediately available.

WCCO-TV - WWE Wrestler Found Dead In Minneapolis

Eddie Guerrero had breakfast this morning with Chavo Guerrero and at least one other wrestler, then returned to his hotel room. When he didn’t come out of his room in the expected amount of time, friends went looking for him and found him dead.

PWtorch reporting…

He had an early wake-up call that he didn’t answer. Chavo Guerrero, who he was traveling with, called the room and again got no answer. When knocks on his hotel room door went unanswered, security got the door open and Eddie was found dead in the bathroom.

Wrestling Observer updating…

World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his Minneapolis hotel room this morning, according to the WWE.

Guerrero, who was born in 1967, was at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis and in town for Sunday night’s “WWE Supershow” at Target Center.

Authorities have not released details about the nature of his death.

Guerrero was featured on the UPN series “WWE Smackdown!” and was the son of Mexican wrestler Gory Guerrero, according to WCCO. He is survived by his wife, Vickie, and daughters Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.

In May 2004, UPN aired the special “Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story.” The one-hour program chronicled his childhood and his struggle with drug addiction that almost cost him his job, family and life before his recovery and eventual capture of the WWE championship.

Guerrero was born into Mexico’s first family of professional wrestling, and his father, Gory Guerrero, and grew up in El Paso, Texas. Eddie and his three older brothers were all wrestlers.

His drug escapades as an adult included while on liquid ecstasy flipping his car going 130 miles per hour. Doctors told the family that it was unlikely he would survive. From there, he went numerous binges abusing cocaine, alcohol and pain killers. He was fired by the WWE, his wife filed for divorce, and the IRS seized his wages.

After recovery, he remarried his wife, reclaimed his job and became the second wrestler of Hispanic heritage to be WWE champion.

While a cause of death for Guerreo wasn’t immediately known, the pro wrestling profession has seen numerous premature deaths in recent years, some tied directly to steroid use.

In a March 2004 report, USA Today said that since 1997, at least 65 wrestlers died in that time, 25 from heart attacks or other coronary problems. Many had enlarged hearts. In five of the 25 deaths, medical examiners found that steroids might have played a role. Excessive steroid use can lead to an enlarged heart. In 12 others, coroners cited evidence of use of painkillers, cocaine and other drugs.

Steroids played a role in the deaths of several pro wrestlers since 1997, USA Today reported, citing medical examiners, family members and the wrestlers themselves. Among them:

Curt Hennig, 44, died of acute cocaine intoxication in 2003. His father said a lethal combination of steroids and painkillers contributed to his death.

(The British Bulldog) Davey Boy Smith, 39,died in 2002 of an enlarged heart with evidence of microscopic scar tissue, possibly from steroid abuse, a coroner said.

Louie (Spicolli) Mucciolo, 27, died from coronary disease in 1998. Investigators found an empty vial of the male hormone testosterone, pain pills and an anxiety-reducing drug.

Richard (Ravishing Rick Rude) Rood, 40, died from an overdose of “mixed medications” in 1999.

(Flyin’) Brian Pillman, 35, was taking painkillers and human-growth hormone when he died from heart disease in 1997, his widow said.

WWE wrestler found dead in Minneapolis hotel room

Mike Johnson at PWinsider takes a look back at Eddie Guerrero’s wrestling career.

WWE.com will have footage of a press conference shortly.

Eddie Guerrero was found in his hotel room in Minneapolis with his toothbrush in his mouth. He apparently died while brushing his teeth. At this point, the belief among WWE personnel is that Guerrero died of heart failure.

Shortly after Guerrero’s body was found and removed from the room, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, Dean Malenko and Chavo Guerrero visited the hotel room to say their goodbyes. WWE wrestlers and staffers were visibly shaken and emotional while leaving the hotel to go the Target Center, the site of tonight’s Raw/Smackdown taping. Word from WWE sources is that the tenor of tonight’s taping will be dramatically different and that the Smackdown show will need to be revised.

PWtorch Updates…

Chavo Guerrero, Jr., Guerrero’s nephew and a fellow WWE wrestler, said he and his uncle flew in together Saturday night and were supposed to meet for breakfast Sunday morning.

When Guerrero did not show up as expected, security was called to open his room, Chavo Guerrero, Jr. said.

WWE Chair Vince McMahon said Sunday’s “Supershow” taping will now be a four-hour tribute to Guerrero, who was a featured star on the UPN series “WWE Smackdown!” The tributes will air this week.

Eddie Guerrero had recently celebrated his fourth year of sobriety, WWE officials said.

The wrestler’s struggles with alcohol and drug addiction were detailed in the DVD “Cheating Death, Stealing Life,” released last year. An autobiography of the same name was due in bookstores this December, according to Simon & Schuster’s Web site.

    I’m so sad.
Goodbye Eddie, you’ll be always in my heart.

I just posted news about this on my own site. It’s a sad sad thing. I find I’m much more affected by this death than by the deaths of other wrestlers. I think in part it’s because Eddie was still an active part of the TV product. But also it’s because it looked as though he had fought his demons and won.

I am shocked and depressed by this awful news. So many of the wrestlers I enjoyed and admired (Hart, Hennig, Pillman, Guerrero’s former tag partner Art Barr) died far too soon and at too young an age.

  8. [...] The Undertaker/Randy Orton Buried Alive match is obviously gone since Orton is replacing Eddie Guerrero. Undertaker is advertised to return at Survivor Series so maybe that will be worth watching. I haven’t been watching Smackdown, so where the hell did Lashley come from? by Matt B | posted in WrestlingBlog Trackback URL | Comment RSS Feed Tag at del.icio.us | Incoming links [...]

It was shock watching raw yesterday..as it airs two weeks delayed, here in india… Eddie Guerrero was a true champion.. he always made us happy.. we loved him a lot… surely, nodoubt we will MISS you Eddie… Eddie Guerrero will always be in our hearts… forever.. and ever …

  10. [...] Rey Mysterio versus Big Show was an agressive match. Rey Mysterio dedicated this match to Eddie Guerrero and even came out to Eddie’s music in the lowrider. Big Show got major heat when he powerbombed Rey onto the hood of the lowrider. While Rey was being attended to, Big Show ran them off saying he wasn’t done yet. When the match was back in the ring, Show threw Rey into the corner which inadvertently knocked out the ref. Big Show used this opportunity to bring a chair into the match, but Rey used it to knock Show to the mat. Just when it looked like Rey was going to pick up the win, the ring exploded and and out came Show’s partner Kane. Kane & Show gave a double chokeslam to Rey Mysterio and then lights out. Undertaker’s gong hits, lights come back and Undertaker is in the middle of the ring. Show & Kane reluctantly turned around and Kane decides to leave the ring. Show is left alone and brawls with Taker. Kane comes back into the ring, but gets a chokeslam for his trouble. Show gets to his feet and is kicked out of the ring. Out of nowhere, Randy Orton slides in GIVES THE RKO! Undertaker is laying flat on his back as Orton pulls a tire iron from the trunk of the lowrider. Taker tries to fend off Orton, but Orton hits Taker in the back of the head several times. Taker is unconcious draped over the back half of the lowrider as Orton revs up the engine. Cowboy Bob Orton wonders what his son is doing as Randy puts the car in reverse. Orton slams on the accelerator and the car goes flying in reverse right through the Smackdown backdrop. The car crashes into some equipment and Randy Orton comes stumbling out of the car and up the aisle. The equipment explodes and everything is on fire, including Eddie’s lowrider. Paramedics try to come to the aid of Taker (you can’t see him because the backdrop is on top of lowrider), but they cannot because everything is on fire. Smackdown goes off the air with Orton looking at what he has done. [...]

  11. [...] Next match is Chavo Guerrero vs Lance Cade. The fans are clearly behind Chavo throughout the entire match. Cade goes for a vertical suplex, but Chavo reverses it into a DDT which knocks Cade out. Chavo ascends the ropes and hits the Frog Splash, in honor of Eddie, for the win. [...]

I was really saddened on the day of Eddies last match, he was truly one of my ydles. When he was on his “evil” phase
I still chanted his name while every one else insulted him.
Eddie will always be remembered as one of the greats.
